Budleigh Salterton, UK

Encountering a book about the medical experiments of the Holocaust aged 8, I have had a keen awareness of suffering from a very young age, intuiting in my early twenties that humans were heading for a crisis of epic proportions if they continued to head down the path they were on.  My life, has therefore, been dedicated to attempts to make sense of and transform suffering in myself , in my relationships and in the world around me. This has variously involved me in protesting against nuclear weapons; weaving together learning from the  women’s movement and pagan spirituality; working as a family therapist in the NHS; training and practicing as a shamanic practitioner; writing a PhD in a Business School on spirituality; training as an conscious movement teacher; raising money in the fight to protect the Amazon rainforests for over ten years, coaching clients suffering from housing crisis; lecturing on the mental health nursing degree at UWE in Bristol; offering clinical supervision to teachers working in a series of trauma-informed care schools and training nurses in trauma inform care within health settings. Most recently I have been studying Huebl’s teaching on the collective trauma field and somatic abolition with Karine Bell at Rooted. I offer online meditation classes and as someone familiar with burn out, I am especially passionate about encouraging self-care and resilience in increasingly challenging settings.

Just over a year ago I attended an XR meeting and read Jem Bendell’s DA paper, which was to provoke another of those cyclical descents when the soul is called into the underworld. My first was dealing with my ‘personal’ depression in my twenties, while the last one had been after the 2009 Copenhagen Summit, when it seemed clear to me that mitigation, was very probably, not going to happen. And then I met Matthew Painton who reminded me that I had a powerful set of tools in my movement practice. Tools, which have, in the past, taken me through three lots of cancer, two premature babies (now healthy young adults) and the suicides of two friends. All these experiences have provided immensely valuable training for what is now unfolding, as Covid19 begins to re-constellate the whole globe. Life is always opening doors into transformation, even up to and including death. Indeed crisis and emergency can often be powerful liminal spaces or transition points in which we can choose to develop our capacity for love, compassion and service. Suffering and pain need not be destructive forces. I am aware, of course, of massive injustices in our world and the fact that, in some ways, I have been gifted with great privilege in the vantage point I have been given in this life. All the more reason to make it a gift back to the collective.

I offer coaching, embodiment practice and both healing and spiritual guidance via shamanic practice. I am also a systemic thinker, interested in working with organisations looking to leverage their creative potential and provide reflective spaces as opportunities for change and care. All of which amounts to holding space for my fellow travellers to take a few breathes amidst the chaos.
