I can offer experiential workshops and presentations of Joanna Macy’s The Work That Reconnects, which I feel are very useful in enabling people to transform their feelings of despair, grief, anger etc, and to reconnect with the earth, with others, and with themselves in love and reverence.
For me, simply opening spaces for people to gather in a circle and create a safe receptacle in which to share their deepest feelings is so important, and breaks down judgement, creating empathy and loving connections between sometimes very disparate people. Joanna Macy’s Work the Reconnects spiral is a particularly helpful and natural process for people to participate in, whatever their background.
I have led workshops in many different settings, from extinction rebellion weeks, to fridays for future groups and many diverse people have attended my own workshops in different parts of Ireland.
I can also offer deep listening work, as a trained spiritual counsellor, and can teach a simple method of contemplation / meditation not based in a particular religious practice, which in my experience is a brilliant tool for steadying oneself, and learning how to keep a balance in difficult times, to access the still spaciousness within so that peace of mind is less dependent on outside events, less pulled by fears and anxieties, less manipulated by the media. These seem to me to be urgent and important skills to be acquired in these times, so that we are brought together through hard times, rather than pulled apart by fear and division.
My sources of inspiration are many and varied; 12 step programme work was my first step in realising I needed to focus on changing myself, rather than seeking to change other people, taking responsibility for my own life, and surrendering control to that immortal spirit which lies within each of us, and it was transformative in my own life. It lead me to my long participation and training in a particularly accessible form of meditation, which has involved teaching many weekend courses.
I have lived most of my life seeking wholeness, simplicity and a closeness to the earth, and cultivating an awareness of how to live lightly, doing as little harm as possible. I have created retreats and workshops using transformative art, creative writing and ecstatic dance. I am in the ongoing process of being a practical mystic, through my a fellowship within The Universal Order. I have more recently trained to become a One Spirit Interfaith Minister, and so am now able to perform marriages and funerals and rites of passage of all kinds for people. I also create ceremonies on the Celtic festivals which, when possible are held in my local town hall, and which I share with all those who wish through email, so that a web of people now sit down together, deeply energetically connected for an hour of reflection, music, and readings based in a philosophy of the universal the quest for meaning. I feel ritual and ceremony are important ways for people to feel connected, and to regain a sense of the sacredness of all life, and their own place within the universe – to place our own struggles, our own problems within a larger frame.
I am also a trained mentor for parents of teenagers on probation , and a Samaritan, and the skills I have learnt through these roles, are I believe of universal helpfulness, and of especial importance in the times we are facing into, and can be passed on as well as practiced.
