In my day job, I work in mainstream mental health, primarily working with adults experiencing a range of difficulties in their lives. My primary modalities are EMDR and IFS, which both help people to re-process memories that have had a detrimental effect on their mental wellbeing, and lead to greater internal harmony and ability to meet their lives and live their values.
Alongside this work, I’ve been developing frameworks and collecting and iterating on practices for working with what I refer to as bigger-than-self distress. This is a construct which I developed in my doctoral research, and it refers to distress people experience that is primarily associated not with personal issues, but with issues bigger-than or outside of what we conventionally view as the self (the individual). This bigger-than-self distress is pervasive, yet often not worked with in intentional, targeted ways, due to a lack of societal narratives and avenues for working with it. What I contend is that working with this is a rich source of meaning, growth, and existential transformation. Working with it in can (and maybe demands us to) connect us to bigger-than-self reality in profound ways, and to deep experiences of belonging and service to things bigger than us that we care about.
Alongside the bigger-than-self distress construct, I developed an approach to support people to metabolise such distress and develop their capacity for enactive wisdom in the world in response to the things they care about in society and the environment. I write more about this Nondual Enactive Wisdom Development and Sensemaking approach in my Substack, biggerthan.substack.com. I work with people from this approach in the gift economy.
