In my work with individuals and groups I use a mindfulness-based wisdom development pedagogy, which I developed in the course of my doctorate in clinical psychology (to be completed in 2021). I’ve been focused on the question of how psychologists, mindfulness teachers, and mental health professionals can assist individuals and groups experiencing what I’ve been calling “bigger-than-self reality distress” for a number of years in my doctoral research project and personal life.

The idea is that to adaptively navigate such distress, which is presented as a primarily rational and nonpathological category of mental distress, we need to grow our capacity for wisdom, which affords us more insight into how to respond rationally – in a way that’s embodied and embedded in our lives – to irrational human behaviour on the collective level which is causing both the psychological distress and the bigger-than-self issues facing humanity this century. The pedagogy, which can be used for one-on-one or group work, creates a container for exploring one’s own responses to bigger-than-self reality distress: seeing through self-deceptive self-defeating loops, and updating our construals (ways of seeing the world) in ways that afford a more optimal grip on reality, opening us to ways of responding that we perhaps could not see before, which take into account the distressing aspects of our collective reality at this time (as well as the beautiful and possibility-expanding ones).

In conjunction with this pedagogy, I use a form of experiential inquiry and a community of being / ecology of being framework for understanding ourselves and the nested communities and ecologies we are a part of and participate in.
